Pushing yourself creatively is not about perfection. It’s about process, spirit, and sharing.
As a writer and teacher, I have always considered the creative process to be a journey. There is no endgame. There’s no perfection, completion, or some fully satisfying end.
Creativity is always haunting those who bow to it. It is an energy that you cannot always control and probably shouldn’t. It is an entity all its own and a creative soul should strive to hold onto the reins and ride it out, give it a shape and place in the world.
That’s what I’ve done here with this streaming music album LIFE THESE DAYS. You can find it on Spotify.
I’ve played guitar for years, a bit of songwriting too. But almost always for the fun of it. And as a stretch of creative energy, the rock-n-roll teenage dreams long faded, I came together with the great musician and producer Jim Olson who heard something in my songwriting. We got into the studio and began the process. It’s been so much fun and a joy creatively.
I am humbled by it all.
It was never about “going on the road” or writing a song some great performer would record. This is simply creativity taking a different form, somehow finding its spot in the universe.
Maybe there is something here that you will like, even love, but most of all, I hope my process is a catalyst for yours. Don’t push creative energy away only to have it manifest in running the vacuum or doing the laundry. Find your creative space and stretch it. No matter what your discipline, press against the boundaries and let it out.
Still hoping for a concert some day.
